Neighborhood session on new sports complex, ag pavilion planned

ISU officials working on plans for a new outdoor sports complex and an agriculture pavilion near the Towers residence halls are inviting Campustown neighbors to a Dec. 8 meeting on the projects. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Knapp Storms Dining Complex.

ISU researcher, collaborators, re-sequence six corn varieties, find some genes missing

Researchers at Iowa State University, China Agricultural University and the Beijing Genomics Institute in China recently re-sequenced and compared six elite inbred corn (maize) lines, including the parents of the most productive commercial hybrids in China, and found
entire genes that were missing from one line to another.

Iowa State, Ames Lab researcher develops new way to study single biological molecules

Sanjeevi Sivasankar will work with Novascan Technologies Inc. of Ames to continue development of a unique microscope that allows researchers to study single molecules. The microscope is designed to advance the study of structural biology. The Grow Iowa Values Fund is supporting commercialization of the instrument.

ISU’s dairy products evaluation team lands runner-up honors at international competition

ISU's Dairy Products Evaluation Team earned a second place finish in the overall category, a first place in yogurt, a second place in cheddar cheese and a third in cottage cheese for the team competition and also scored individual awards including a first in yogurt at the annual, international competiton.

ISU economist addresses state's holiday retail prospects as economy struggles

Liesl Eathington, director of ISU's Regional Economics and Community Analysis Program who serves on the Governor's Council of Economic Advisors, used recent indicators for Iowa's economy to compile the "2010 Holiday Retail Sales Outlook." Eathington reports many households across the state still won't have a lot of discretionary income to spend this holiday season.

English professor Percy earns rave reviews as a rising literary star

Benjamin Percy, an ISU assistant professor of English, has received great acclaim for his debut novel, "The Wilding," a tragic wilderness tale set in Percy's native central Oregon. The book has already won rave reviews from The Boston Globe, Men's Journal, Esquire, Outside magazine, Barnes & Noble, Booklist and Publisher's Weekly, which compared it to a contemporary "Deliverance."
