Hansen Early Childhood Lecture to be Oct. 13 at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences has named a nationally recognized expert on early childhood behavior the 2004-2005 Barbara E. (Mound) Hansen Early Childhood Lecture Series Endowment speaker.

Judith Carta will be on campus Oct. 13 - 15. She will speak on "Seven Successful Strategies for Preventing Challenging Behavior in Young Children" at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Pioneer Room, Memorial Union. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Carta is a professor of special education and a senior scientist for the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life-Span Studies, University of Kansas, Lawrence.

She researches early care and education programs for children growing up in poverty, monitors development and education progress of infants and young children, and studies classroom programs and support for young children's literacy and social interactions.

At Iowa State, Carta will meet with faculty conducting research, give three class lectures, tour the Child Development Laboratory School, and interact informally with human development and family studies faculty and staff.

"The Hansen Lecture Series is used to address cutting-edge topics in early childhood education," said Carol Alexander Phillips, program coordinator and director for Iowa State's human development and family studies lab school. "Her collaborative research with ISU faculty on poverty, disabilities, and interventions to improve developmental outcomes for young children is a natural fit."

Established in 2001, the Hansen Early Childhood Education Lecture Series Endowment is made possible by a gift from Richard and Barbara (Mound) Hansen. The Hansens created the series to bring contemporary, issue-oriented topics on early childhood education to the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
