Three Iowa broadcast companies create apprenticeship programs at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa -- Three Des Moines broadcast companies -- KCCI-TV 8, WHO-TV 13 and Mediacom -- will create paid internships and scholarships for students in Iowa State University's Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

Michael Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School, said the broadcast apprenticeship program is modeled after similar Iowa State programs with Meredith Corporation, Des Moines, and the Scripps Howard Foundation, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Iowa State students will work 400-hour internships and earn $3,000. An additional $1,000 scholarship is awarded upon completion of the apprenticeship. Students will be interviewed in January 2006 for internships that summer. All three companies have committed to the program for three years.

"We're delighted to have these affiliations," Bugeja said. "Our best students will go to those outlets and strengthen the Greenlee School's partnerships with the broadcasters."
