Applications available for 10 Pappajohn Scholarship awards

AMES, Iowa --Iowa State University students may now apply for 10 $1,000 John and Mary Pappajohn Scholarship awards. The application deadline is March 1.

Judi Eyles, assistant director of the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, said the scholarships are for students who will be juniors, seniors or graduate students in fall 2005; and who have started, plan to start or are involved in entrepreneurship programs.

Scholarship forms are online at www.isupjcenter.org/programs/PJscholarship. Eyles said applicants also are judged on a clear description of a business plan or concept and work experience.

Steve Saltzman, a senior in electrical engineering from Corning, said the scholarship helped lessen the financial burden of being a student and business owner.

"Being able to reinvest profits back into my business rather than using them to pay for school has been a big factor in growing my company," Saltzman said. "I now have the opportunity to make my business a full-time venture when I graduate."

The Pappajohns, Des Moines, created the scholarship in 1998. Since then, $70,000 has been awarded to Iowa State entrepreneurship students from several colleges. The couple also funded the creation of the entrepreneurship centers in 1996.
