Military tribunals lawyer to speak at ISU Memorial Union Monday

AMES, Iowa -- Neal Katyal, the Georgetown University law professor who challenged the legality of the military tribunals and helped change the military trials for detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will speak at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in the Sun Room, Memorial Union. The event is free and open to the public.

Katyal's presentation, "The Role of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Global War on Terror," will address the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-3 finding that the president's tribunals violated the constitutional separation of powers, domestic military law and international law.

Katyal is an expert in national security law, the American Constitution, the Geneva Conventions and the roles of the president and Congress in a post 9-11 world. He also served as Al Gore's co-counsel in the U.S. Supreme Court election dispute of 2000.
