Two Iowa State fashion design students to be honored in New York City

AMES, Iowa - Two Iowa State University seniors majoring in apparel merchandising, design and production are headed to New York City to accept scholarship awards during a ceremony and dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

The scholarship is given by the Young Menswear Association and is offered to assist talented student designers who need financial assistance.

Amanda McBroom, a senior from Winterset, and Danielle Buckingham, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., will be recognized at the New York ceremony, which will also be attended by representatives of some of the biggest names in the fashion industry, such as Calvin Klein, Liz Claiborne, Rocawear and Polo Jeans.

"There will be more than 1,500 industry people at the banquet," said McBroom, who had an internship in New York last summer. "And lots of companies are looking for these types of scholars."

Buckingham also interned last summer in New York for Oxford, where she worked with men's sportswear.

This is the first time Iowa State university students have applied for the scholarship. Winning two scholarships should bring some acclaim to ISU's program, according to McBroom.

"This is good exposure for Iowa State," she said. "It shows everyone that we are out there and that we're good."
