IOWA DISTANCE LEARNING ASSOCIATION HONORS ISU VETERINARY MEDICINE EDUCATIONAL SERIES

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa Distance Learning Association has honored a series of educational programs on livestock bioterrorism produced by Iowa State University's Outreach Academy for Veterinary Medicine and Rural Community Development.

The five-part series, "Livestock Security and Bioterrorism Defense," received the association's 2003 Innovator of the Year Award for Higher Education. The award was presented April 3 in Waterloo at the joint annual conference of the Iowa Educational Media Association, the Iowa Association for Communication Technology and the Iowa Distance Learning Association.

More than 50 first responders--veterinarians, local law enforcement personnel, county emergency management coordinators, municipal government officials and ISU Extension specialists--participated in the interactive education sessions delivered via the Iowa Communications Network.

Topics covered in the series included homeland security; prevention and response; registrations, regulations, storing and shipping samples; agents of mass disruption; and incursion scenarios.

Dr. Nolan Hartwig, professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine and Extension veterinarian, is coordinator of the Outreach Academy for Veterinary Medicine and Rural Community Development. The series was coordinated by Dr. Eldon Uhlenhopp, associate professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine and coordinator for livestock security and bioterrorism defense activities of the academy.

The series was funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service.
