WHITE NAMED INTERIM DEAN OF IOWA STATE'S
COLLEGE OF FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

AMES, Iowa -- Pamela White, University Professor of food science and human nutrition, has been named interim dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at Iowa State University. The appointment is effective July 1, announced Benjamin Allen, vice president for academic affairs and provost.

"White has a great understanding of the college and is respected across campus," said Allen. "She has achieved national recognition in her field through research. Im looking forward to working with her."

White came to Iowa State in 1975 as an instructor in the food science and human nutrition department. She received her Ph.D. in food technology from Iowa State in 1981 and was named University Professor in 2001. She served as interim department chair for food science and human nutrition from 1995 to1997.

White earned a B.S. in foods and nutrition science in 1972 and an M.S. in food science in 1974, both from the University of Washington, Seattle. Last year, she earned the 2002 Alton E. Bailey Award for outstanding research accomplishments in fats and oils from the American Oil Chemists' Society, a group for which she served as president from 1993 to1994.

White's research includes oxidation of edible oils and their sensory and chemical changes, uses of antioxidants in oils, lipid-carbohydrate interactions, and evaluation of starch structure/function relationships and genetic manipulation of starch structure in corn to create new and improved products for the food industry.

"I am delighted to be given the honor of leading the College of Family and Consumer Sciences during this transition to a new dean," said White. "Our activities are at the heart of what is important to the state, the nation and the world. We have strong programs that not only educate students but also give back to the state and its people by promoting financial and personal well-being."

Allen said he will form a committee to conduct a national search for a permanent dean soon. The committee is expected to begin work in late summer.

White succeeds Carol B. Meeks, who has been dean of the college since 1997. Meeks, who will step down as dean on June 30, will remain on the faculty as director of the Center for Family Policy.
