ISU VETERINARY MEDICINE DEAN WILL RETIRE IN MAY

AMES, Iowa -- Norman Cheville, dean of Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, will retire at the end of the 2003-04 academic year.

Cheville was named interim dean in October 2000 and dean in May 2001. This year, he will lead the college through its upcoming accreditation process, and continue to advocate for renovation and expansion of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

"The college has made remarkable progress and is positioned to lead the nation in production animal medicine, food security, public health training and other veterinary issues. This is a satisfying time for me to depart," Cheville said.

Cheville is a Distinguished Professor of veterinary pathology and a nationally recognized researcher on bovine brucellosis. He led a team that developed a vaccine that was important in eradicating the highly infectious disease.

Cheville joined the National Animal Disease Center in 1963, serving as research leader and chief of pathology from 1964 to 1989 and research leader for brucellosis from 1989 to 1995. He then served as chair of the veterinary pathology department at Iowa State for five years. He was interim chair of biomedical sciences from 1997 to 1999, before being named dean.

"We deeply appreciate Norm Cheville's service to Iowa State University and the discipline of veterinary medicine," said Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy. "As a Distinguished Professor and scholar, he has made many very significant contributions to animal health research and education, and as dean, he has helped guide our College of Veterinary Medicine to new levels of excellence. We wish him the best in his well-earned retirement."

Ben Allen, vice president for academic affairs and provost, said he will meet with the leadership of the veterinary medicine college to form a search committee for the new dean. The search is expected to take about one year.
