Iowa State will award an honorary degree to Joanne Eicher, a Regents professor in the area of textiles and apparel at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. Eicher has played a key role in developing understanding of and respect for African textiles in the U.S. Over the past 40 years, she has researched textiles and clothing in more than a dozen countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. Eicher is known for her scholarly study in clothing traditions of this country, beginning with benchmark research in the 1960s on adolescent development and dress as a form of nonverbal communication.

Eicher will briefly address the undergraduate students during the ceremony.

On Friday, Dec. 19 at 8 p.m., Iowa State will hold its graduate commencement in Stephens Auditorium, where an estimated 77 students will receive doctoral degrees and 228 students will receive master's degrees.
