NASA ASTRONAUT IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE ON RACE AND ETHNICITY

AMES, Iowa -- Commander John Herrington, the first American Indian to fly in space, will provide the keynote address at the Iowa State University Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) on March 7.

Herrington was selected by NASA in 1996 and has logged more than 3,300 flight hours in 30 different types of aircraft. Three months ago, he flew on the shuttle Endeavour, the 16th shuttle mission to visit the International Space Station. His mission included three spacewalks to repair and replace space station equipment.

An enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, Herrington has a degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado and a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

Herrington's 12:45 p.m. lecture in the Memorial Union Sun Room is a highlight of the fourth-annual ISCORE, a comprehensive forum on issues of race and ethnicity. ISCORE, set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Memorial Union, is free and open to the Iowa State and Ames community.
