HARVARD PROFESSOR HOWARD GARDNER WILL PRESENT "ART, SCIENCE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY THOUGHT" ON JAN. 28 AT ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Howard Gardner, a professor internationally known for his theory of multiple intelligences and his efforts to reform schools, will present a lecture on "Art, Science and Interdisciplinary Thought," Tuesday, Jan. 28, 8 p.m., at Stephens Auditorium, Iowa State University.

Gardner is the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor in Cognition and Education at the Graduate School in Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He also is an adjunct professor of neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Gardner introduced his theory of multiple intelligences in his 1983 book, "Frames of Mind." The theory is a critique of the notion that there exists a single human intelligence that can be assessed by standard psychometric instruments.

Gardner leads Harvard Project Zero, a human cognition research group that focuses on the arts. During the past 15 years, they have worked on the design of performance-based assessments, education for understanding, and the use of multiple intelligences to achieve more personalized curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Gardner is the author of 18 books, which have been translated into 21 languages, including, "Intelligence Reframed," "Good Work: When Excellence and Ethics Meet" and "The Disciplined Mind: Beyond Facts And Standardized Tests, The K-12 Education That Every Child Deserves."

Gardner received a MacArthur Prize Fellowship in 1981 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000. He has been awarded 18 honorary degrees.
