KADOLPH EARNS USDA TEACHING AWARD

AMES, Iowa -- An Iowa State University College of Family and Consumer Sciences professor is one of eight recipients of the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges presented the award.

Sara Kadolph, professor of textiles and clothing, was one of two North Central Region recipients and the first Iowa State University faculty member to win the award. Each of four districts has two award winners.

Kadolph came to Iowa State in 1980 as an assistant professor. In 1995, she was promoted to associate professor and she became a full professor in 2002. She is lead author of "Textiles," an introductory textile science text that is used by more than 180 colleges and universities in the United States and several foreign countries.

A multiple award-winner for both teaching and advising of undergraduate and graduate students in the textiles and clothing program, Kadolph earned the ISU Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement in Advising in 2001. In 2000, Kadolph received both the Bobbin Educator of the Year Award from the International Textile and Apparel Association and the ISU Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching.

Carol Meeks, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and Mary Gregoire, chair of the department of apparel, educational studies and hospitality management, which includes the textiles and clothing program, recommended Kadolph for the award.

"Sara has excelled in teaching at Iowa State for more than 20 years," Gregoire said. "Student evaluations of her teaching consistently exceed department and college averages. She has a unique ability to engage her students in a shared enthusiasm for the coursework."

Kadolph also co-directed and hosted the first International Colour Congress in May 2002 that brought more than 250 fiber artists, textile researchers, dyers, entrepreneurs and hobbyists from 23 countries to Iowa State. Participants shared industry practices and considered the role of natural dyes in renewable and sustainable agriculture, the economics of developing countries and the cultural identities of various groups.

Created in 1990, the USDA award encompasses teaching in a diverse group of academic areas including agriculture, natural resources, veterinary science and human sciences. Nominees are evaluated for classroom teaching, use of innovative teaching styles and technology, service to students and the profession, and scholarship.

Founded in 1887, the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges is a voluntary association of public research universities, land-grant institutions, and many state university systems.
