JAMES DAVIS NAMED INTERIM DIRECTOR OF ISU'S ACADEMIC INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

AMES, Iowa -- James Davis, associate professor of computer engineering at Iowa State University, has been named interim director of the university's Office of Academic Information Technologies (AIT). The one-year appointment is effective July 1.

AIT provides information technology and services to Iowa State faculty and students.

"Jim Davis is an outstanding member of our faculty, and his experience will be valuable in the operation of AIT. I appreciate his willingness to assume this responsibility," said President Gregory Geoffroy.

Davis joined the faculty in 1984, after receiving his doctoral degree in computer science from Iowa State. He served as associate chair of the electrical and computer engineering department from 2001 to 2003, and as interim chair in spring 2003.

Davis teaches graduate courses in computer security and undergraduate courses in software systems and programming. He conducts research in network and computer security, and is leading a national effort to define curricula for the emerging discipline of computer security.

Davis is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., (IEEE) and of the Association for Computing Machinery. He is on the editorial board of IEEE Security & Privacy, a board member of the National Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education and of the Commonwealth (Virginia) Information Security Center, and on program committees for several conferences and workshops in computer security research. He has won several awards for teaching.

Davis, who worked at AIT while in graduate school, said he has a good understanding of the unit's work. "I've been on both sides of this, as a developer of technologies and as a consumer of AIT's services," he said.

"Since its inception, AIT has been an integral part of teaching and learning, research and outreach by providing the most effective computing and communications technology to educators, researchers and students. I'm honored to have the opportunity to help AIT continue that mission," Davis said.

While serving as interim director, Davis will continue to work with Iowa State graduate students on research in computer security.

Davis replaces Dorothy Lewis, who served as AIT director since May 2002.
