MICHAEL BUGEJA NAMED DIRECTOR OF IOWA STATE'S GREENLEE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATION

AMES, Iowa -- Michael Bugeja (Boo ZHAy uh), professor and associate director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, Athens, has been named professor and director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University, effective July 1.

His appointment, announced today by Peter Rabideau, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is subject to review by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Bugeja replaces John Eighmey as director of the Greenlee School. Eighmey will remain on the Greenlee School faculty. The Greenlee School has 21 full-time faculty positions, 16 lecturers, 1,066 undergraduate students and three majors.

Since 2001, Bugeja has served as associate director of the Scripps School of Journalism and has served twice as acting director. The Scripps School has 26 full-time professors, six adjunct professors and 850 undergraduate students in six different majors. While at Ohio University, Bugeja twice was chosen by the student body as a university professor (1988, 2000), which honors outstanding teaching.

In addition to his duties in the Scripps School, Bugeja served as a special assistant to Ohio University President Robert Glidden on issues involving media, academic integrity and character education and helped to foster more dialogue about ethics among faculty and students via research, seminars, public speeches and professional development.

The author of 20 books, including two major journalism and mass communication textbooks, Bugeja has a third textbook recommended for publication by Oxford University Press titled "Interpersonal Divide: The Search for a Community in the Technological Age."

Bugeja is a member of several editorial and advisory boards, including the Journal of College and Character, Whitston Publishing Co. and Writer's Digest. He is a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and Ohio Arts Council, and a project director for the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Previously, Bugeja was an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Broadcasting at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, and state editor for United Press International in South Dakota.

Bugeja holds a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University and a master's from South Dakota State University, Brookings.

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication is the largest and most comprehensive accredited journalism and communication program in Iowa. Courses of study include newspaper and magazine journalism, electronic media studies, science communication, public relations, advertising, visual communication, organizational communication and intercultural communication.
