IOWA STATES SOUKOULIS RECEIVES HUMBOLDT RESEARCH AWARD
AMES, Iowa -- Costas Soukoulis, professor of physics and astronomy at Iowa State University and senior physicist with the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) Ames Laboratory, will receive an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Award.
Humboldt research awards are given annually to foreign scholars with internationally recognized academic qualifications. The recipients are invited to do research in Germany in collaboration with German scholars.
Soukoulis will spend six months in Germany. He is currently splitting time between Germany (University of Karlsruhe), Greece (University of Crete and the Research Center of Crete, FORTH) and Iowa State working on photonic crystals.
A faculty member at Iowa State since 1984, Soukoulis is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society. He held an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in 1991 and has received an Energy 100 Award and Science 100 Award from DOE. In 1992, Soukoulis was also recognized by DOEs materials sciences division for outstanding scientific accomplishment in solid state physics. He received Iowa States Outstanding Achievement in Research Award in 2001 and the equivalent honor from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2000.
