HOW BRAIN RESEARCH CAN IMPROVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IS SUBJECT OF APRIL 2 LECTURE AT ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Robert Sylwester, a leading expert on the application of neuroscience knowledge to teaching and learning, will speak at Iowa State University, Wednesday, April 2.

Sylwester's lecture, "A Celebration of Neurons: Connecting Brain Processes and Cultural Practices," will be at 7 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Iowa State Memorial Union. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Sylwester is an emeritus professor of education at the University of Oregon, Eugene. He is the author of several books and more than 150 journal articles on the educational implications and applications of new developments in science and technology, particularly theoretical and research developments in cognition and stress. He has given more than 1300 conference and in-service presentations on the significant role that brain research can play in improving teaching and learning.

Sylwester's books include, "A Biological Brain in a Cultural Classroom: Applying Biological Research to Classroom Management," "A Celebration of Neurons: An Educator's Guide to the Human Brain" and "Brain Research: Theory and Classroom Applications." He also writes a monthly column for the acclaimed Internet magazine, "BrainConnection."

This lecture is sponsored by the Colleges of Design and Education, Foundations of Design and Creativity Forum, department of curriculum and instruction, Center for Teaching Excellence, Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching, Iowa State Art Education Club, Design Council, and the ISU Committee on Lectures (funded by the Government of the Student Body).
