05-05-2003 | University Relations Statement from Gregory L. Geoffroy, President Iowa State University The past week has been a trying time for the Iowa State University family. This afternoon, we accepted Larry Eustachy's resignation as head men's basketball coach at Iowa State University. By resolving this situation today, we will continue to move forward in fulfilling our important mission of providing students with the best education possible. We are first and foremost an educational institution that values integrity, honesty and treating others with fairness and respect. We believe accepting his resignation will bring resolution to a very difficult issue. This decision is in the best interests of the university, Mr. Eustachy and the Iowa State family. This decision enables our basketball program to move forward, and it supports Mr. Eustachy and his family in his struggle with alcohol. It has been a difficult period for the university, for our student-athletes, for our fans, and for our Athletic Director Bruce Van De Velde. Now that this issue is behind us, it is important for us to come together as a university family and to support each other as we move forward. I want to thank Bruce Van De Velde for his leadership, and I want you to know that I have supported him throughout this process. I have asked Bruce to proceed immediately with the task of identifying the very best candidates possible for the position of head men's basketball coach at Iowa State University. Finally, I also want to thank everyone for their understanding and support during this period. I truly wish Mr. Eustachy and his family well in the future. (See news release.) |
