ARMS CONTROL EXPERT TO SPEAK AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
AMES, Iowa -- An expert on arms control treaties will lecture on test ban treaty research and warhead monitoring beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Room 5, Physics Building.
David Hafemeister, professor emeritus of physics at California Polytechnic State, will address the National Academy of Sciences' studies on Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and warhead monitoring. When the CTBT was defeated in the U.S. Senate during the Clinton Administration, the National Academy of Sciences was commissioned to review a variety of technical issues. Those issues included the U.S. capacity to maintain safety/reliability and design/evaluation of its nuclear stockpile without test, the international/U.S. capability to monitor test bans, the ability of nations to increase nuclear capability with or without cheating, and the potential effects on U.S. security.
Hafemeister served as a professional staff member with the U.S. Senate Committees on Foreign Relations and Governmental Affairs for 12 years, specializing in arms control treaties at the end of the Cold War. He also served as a science adviser to Sen. John Glenn and has held appointments at Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Stanford, Princeton and the Lawrence-Berkeley, Argonne, and Los Alamos national laboratories.
