ISU DESIGN COLLEGE BRINGS GROUNDBREAKING EXHIBITION TO CAMPUS OCT. 27-NOV. 14

AMES, Iowa -- Innovative interpretations of the 21st-century home by more than 30 international designers will be on display in Gallery 181, College of Design, Iowa State University, Oct. 27-Nov. 14.

"transformation: new international design" is a groundbreaking show produced by Parsons School of Design, New York. It features 38 pieces of furniture, lighting, ceramics, wood and textile objects for the home -- all by women. Many of the designers are well established in Europe, but rarely exhibited in the United States.

"The works in the exhibition reflect the often-unorthodox approach that designers bring to iconic pieces for the home," said Ingrid Lilligren, ISU associate professor of art and design. "The exhibition celebrates designs that use unexpected and surprising materials, processes or forms to reinvent the familiar."

The exhibition was shown at Parsons earlier this year. The viewing at Iowa State is the exhibition's first appearance outside of New York, Lilligren said.

"This is a rare opportunity for Iowans to see truly creative and thought-provoking design that is on the leading edge of innovation," Lilligren said.

"transformation: new international design" is juried by Susan Yelavich, curator, writer and former assistant director for public programs at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution; and Chee Pearlman, design critic and former editor-in-chief of I.D. magazine. Jessica Corr, founder of the design group Collaborative and a faculty member at Parsons, and Julie Stahl, founding director of JULIE MLLER STAHL inc., a design marketing and consulting firm, curated the exhibition.

Stahl will speak at the exhibition's opening reception, which will be Oct. 27 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Gallery 181. The public is invited to attend.

Gallery 181 is on the ground floor of the College of Design building. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday; and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The exhibition closes at noon on Nov. 14. Admission is free and all exhibitions are open to the public.

"transformation: new international design" is the first external exhibition in Gallery 181 since November 2001. It is part of the College of Design's Silver Anniversary celebration, which features notable speakers and special exhibitions throughout the year.
