MEDIA ADVISORY
SNOW PLOWS AND MOTOR GRADERS COMPETE IN "ROADEO" AT ISU SEPT. 11
There will be a flurry of activity in the parking lot of Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University, Thursday, Sept. 11, when teams of snow plow and motor grader operators test their driving skills in the Iowa Maintenance Training Expo's "roadeo."
Up to 40 teams of snow plow drivers from Iowa cities and counties will compete in timed events on a driving course packed with components such as hammer-head turnarounds, barrels in a serpentine formation, mailboxes and parked cars.
Motor grader operators will compete in a separate roadeo. This will include ball-in-chute maneuvers and bull grading, in which operators must knock blocks off of stands of different heights, without knocking over the stands.
The Iowa Maintenance Training Expo, Sept. 9-11, is the state's annual educational training session for those who take care of Iowa's more than 113,000 miles of roads. It presents the latest research, technologies and techniques for summer and winter road maintenance. The Expo is coordinated by the Center for Transportation Research and Education at Iowa State.
Media are welcome to attend the roadeo, which will include many visual activities. The driving test will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. and should last until about 2:15 p.m., depending on the number of teams competing. The course is in the Hilton parking lot near S. 4th Street.
