An exhibition of 18 of Ingrid Lilligren's abstract ceramic sculptures will be on display at the Dubuque Museum of Art Feb. 27-May 27. Lilligren is associate professor of art and design. The show, "Ingrid Lilligren, A Certain Consistency. Works 1996-2006," derives its title from Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay, "Self Reliance."

Shashi Nambisan named director of Iowa State's transportation center

Shashi Nambisan, who directed the transportation center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for eight years, will be the new director of Iowa State University's Center for Transportation Research and Education.

Acker named endowed chair

David Acker has been named the first Raymond and Mary Baker Chair in Global Agriculture at Iowa State. Wendy Wintersteen, dean of the College of Agriculture, said Acker has played a leadership role in expanding the college's global programs and partnerships.

Thousands of students attended educational sessions and visited the Iowa State exhibit at the "I'll Make Me A World" event in Des Moines Jan. 26-27. ISU is a major sponsor of the event, which is the state's largest African American cultural gathering.

Scholarship winner honored at White House

ISU journalism student Fred Love accepted a new Iowa State scholarship in a special presentation at the White House Jan. 26. The scholarship, established at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, honors the late Hugh Sidey, a 1950 Iowa State graduate and long-time White House correspondent for Time magazine. On hand for the presentation were First Lady Laura Bush, former President George H.W. Bush, ISU President Gregory Geoffroy and Greenlee School director Michael Bugeja.

ISU to implement new budget model

President Gregory Geoffroy announced Jan. 23 that the university would implement a new budget model. Geoffroy's announcement followed recent endorsements of the Resource Management Model by key employee groups and a progress report issued Jan. 22 by the committee working on the design and implementation of the model.

Iowa State study finds prevalence of overweight among Iowa prep linemen

A study by two researchers from Iowa State's Department of Health and Human Performance found that among linemen on 251 Iowa high school football rosters during the 2005 season, nine percent had body mass indexes that would be classified as adult class obesity.

Activities to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

Several events in the ISU/Ames community will honor the memory of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Activities over several weeks will include birthday celebrations, a panel discussion and a lecture on King. Iowa State University offices will be closed and classes will not be held Jan. 15, in observance of the national King holiday. Jan. 15 is the 78th anniversary of King's birth.

ISU seminar will present techniques to help noise-phobic pets

Thunderstorm anxiety and fear of loud, abrupt noises are common behavioral problems reported by pet owners, says Dr. Kim Langholz, a community practice veterinarian at Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Langholz will present a seminar, "Thunderstorm Anxiety and Noise Phobias," at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in room 2532 Veterinary Medicine building to discuss ways to help pets modify behavioral responses.

ISU Assistant Professor of Sociology Susan Stewart says that a New York Times analysis of 2001 census results finding that 51 percent of U.S. women are living without a husband shouldn't come as a surprise given recent demographic changes.

Committee submits progress report on budget model

The committee working on a new budget model for Iowa State has submitted a progress report on the design and implementation of the model, which is now called the Resource Management Model. In the Jan. 22 report, the committee recommends continuing with the implementation process and offers some observations on institutional culture changes that will facilitate that process.

Greenlee School scholarship honoring Sidey will be announced at White House

A new scholarship in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication will be formally announced at a special presentation at the White House Jan. 26. First Lady Laura Bush and former President George H.W. Bush are scheduled to host the event. Reiman Gardens closed Jan. 23 due to water outage

Reiman Gardens will be closed to the public Tuesday, Jan. 23, due to a planned water outage at the facility. Workers will be upgrading water services in the area.

Reiman exhibit recalls famous ISU botanists

A plant exhibit at Reiman Gardens evokes memories of ISU botanist Louis Pammel and two of his illustrious students -- George Washington Carver and Ada Hayden. The "Stream of Passion" exhibit will be on display in the Reiman conservatory through April 1. The public can view the exhibit at no charge during the opening reception Jan. 18 (5-7 p.m.).

Geoffroy, Badenhope on WOI Radio's 'Talk'

President Gregory Geoffroy and Julia Badenhope, landscape architecture, will be guests on the Jan. 24 edition of WOI Radio's "Talk of Iowa" (11 a.m.-noon, AM 640). Badenhope leads a community visioning program that helps community leaders make good decisions about local landscapes.

Jersey Jewel to grace new ISU Dairy Farm

Norma "Duffy" Lyon, the state fair's "Butter Cow Lady" and a 1951 ISU animal science alumna, has created a bronze sculpture for the Iowa State University Dairy Farm. Jersey Jewel will be installed on the lawn of the new Dairy/Animal Science Education and Discovery Facility when it's completed later this year. For now, the bronze is in the Kildee Hall atrium.

City snow ordinance in effect

The City of Ames Snow Ordinance is in effect. Snow routes are marked by red, white and blue signs, and cars parked on snow routes will be ticketed and towed. Cars should be moved to off-street parking or to streets that are not designated snow routes. The snow ordinance remains in effect until the streets are completely plowed from curb to curb, AND it has stopped snowing.

The 2006 Iowa FIRST LEGO League Championship will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 20 in Howe and Hoover halls on the Iowa State University campus. The competition will attract 67 teams of school students from all over Iowa.

Due to inclement weather, Iowa State's Reiman Gardens will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 21. The gardens will resume normal hours (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) on Monday.
